The decision process..
The decision to buy a new watch is a personal one.
State of my collection - currently overloaded with black and blue dials, time for a change
Brand accessibility - I am not a patient person, I hate waiting, the secret waitlist game, to be honest, grates at me
Sometimes I am impulsive - I now have to know that the watch is something I want, not just trending high on instagram
Wearability and quality, if I am going to spend $k on a watch, it has to be awesome, lets face it, we have all bought watches that end up in the draw
My new requirement is, can I see myself having this for life, something I can pass down, something where the story of the watch will be passed down at a BBQ
And lastly, and probably the most important, the purchase experience.
Omega has fast come a brand that connects with me. It caters for all wrists, all tastes and price. I landed with the Omega Speedmaster 38. Here is why..
The purchase story..
On a Sunday, I decided after months of admiring the Seamaster 300, I was ready to jump in. I knew in my heart it would be too big. I wanted it to be amazing when I tried it on. So I made a call to Omega Sydney. I talked with the lady about what I was thinking. It was pretty clear the 42MM white dial Seamaster was going to be too big. She made some suggestions, she asked me what I was looking for. I said the Speedmaster 38 looks amazing. I gave her the reference no. They only had it on a leather strap. After a quick conversation there was one on a bracelet at Bondi Junction. 1.5hr compute from where I live, but what the heck, I want to go and look.
In no time I received a call to say Bondi have the 38mm Speedy and have reserved for me.
Arriving I was introduced to the sales gentleman. He was so wonderful. He kindly said you have come a long way, feel free to try on other pieces. Then I tried on the Aqua Terra white dial and of course the Seamaster. And yes, it was miles too big. I love big watches, but it just didnt sit right. I dont like drawing attention to my wrist. In fact I dont share my collection with people I know. Why, because they are not into watches. That cool with me.
Then the decision, the AT or the SM38 - white with the gold accents? Both in the budget, both hit the white dial brief. The decision was really down to the wearability. The stainless steal with the gold accents just hit the brief. Purchase done.
What is under the hood:
Simplicity, automatic, clean, gold accents, the Speedmaster 38 is beautiful.

A week on the wrist
This one has some weight to it . First thing I noticed is how much different this one wears in comparison with the Speedmaster Reduced. The difference is noticeable straight away.
With the thicker dial there is definitely more weight to the watch. It is good that it actually reminds me that I have it on my wrist.
Second thing is the vibration that happens. At first it is kinda weird, however this watches auto winding reminds me it is there and working.
I find it really easy to read. The dial has with the gold accents gives it a feel that is very legible. I love the small seconds on the left. The oval shaped inserts gives the watch a real classy look. While on the white they oval shapes are more discrete, the shape is much more obvious with the other colour / style options in the range.
I also notice the time is keeping quite well. While yes, the honeymoon period is still going, I dont wear it all the time. Maybe around 8-10 hours a day.
Conversely there are a few things to consider. The watch did not need any adjustments on my wrist - 6.5 inch. So it is definitely suited to small, medium wrist sizes. It fits quite loose on my wrist.
Also, the bracelet, while improved from the Speedmaster Reduced, I see it getting swapped out at some point. For now though I am keen to keep it original for as long as possible.
And lastly the lume isn’t the greatest. The illumination is only on the tips of the hour markers and the hands - and it isn’t very strong.
Overall, in all I am extremely happy, the purchase experience with Omega was first class and the watch, well it is a winner.
